(recurring) DREAMS

The first production of DREAMS was held in 2010 after members of Datura Blues and Beast, Please Be Still were inspired by the trend towards live film scoring events.  Akira Kurosawa's Dreams was adopted for its segmented narrative, thematic symbolism and topical relevance (the story is divided into eight short films each  recalling a dream Kurosawa had over the course of his life.)  From 2010-2014 (recurring) DREAMS was held in the front yard of The Mad Haus in Portland, Oregon.  Since 2015 the event has been hosted by The Sanctuary in Arcata.

How it works...  We project Dreams onto a large screen.  Eight musical outfits perform, each to their own individual scene.  Musicians perform in real time but from behind the screen (In this sense, backstage is configured similar to an orchestra pit.)  Suspension of disbelief occurs from the audience having no way to predict where sounds emanate from, what instruments are being played, who's "performing," etc.

This is what makes (recurring) DREAMS different from other events similar in nature.  Like the musicians, the audience is also entirely engaged in the moment of creation, placing emphasis on the story arc (and the value of subtitles!) to evoke a unique and powerful multi-media experience.
