"Whether by design or by circumstance, Datura Blues have been steadily lurking, undercover style, below the Portland music scene for a number of years now. But it's time you fixed your gaze—or, I suppose, your ears—on their perception-expanding prog-psych, because they've just released a great new 7-inch, Damn These Shackles of Gravity! The new record concisely sums up their wild and woolly weirdness via shifting rhythms, groaning bass, spaced-out synths, and gas-pipe saxophone, plus too many other weird elements to catalog. I listened to this record—at the wrong speed, it turns out—after a night of watching American Horror Story, and I don't think I'll ever be quite the same. Fans of bands like Van der Graaf Generator and Amon Düül II will find much to savor in Datura Blues, while those whose record collections don't predate 1982 will probably have their minds blown."

Our Mission

The BPBS bloodline may be traced to late 2001 when members of the psychedelic rock outfit Datura Blues first coined the phrase "Beast, Please be Still..." These four simple words were adopted as the band's Mantra and have since been subject to a wide array of interpretations... The Beast's infancy was spent in Humboldt County, CA where it served as host to the Datura Blues more experimental leanings (as a recording project, live performance group and song concept...)

Over the course of its decade long evolution the BPBS monikor has come to represent many things to many folks... However, despite the community's nomadic tendencies and a constant deviation from one mode of operation to the next, the ongoing and traditional purpose of Beast, Please be Still is to explore and expand upon the collective artistic interests of Datura Blues members and their friends, without limiting the Mantra to one conceptual interpretation, environment or cast of characters...

The latest incarnation of BPBS draws inspiration from its cultural heritage while extending a hand towards a larger community of family and friends, connected by their devotion to similar ideals and worldviews, and deeply committed to a grassroots approach of distributing and archiving their artistic endeavors...
